SONIC YOUTH: SLEEPING NIGHTS AWAKE (84min.)
Dir. Michael Albright

Founded in 1981 in New York City, Sonic Youth remains one of the most progressive and successful bands to rise from the No Wave art and music scene. Mixing a blend of punk, garage rock, and avant-garde sensibilities, the band has captured the ears and hearts of adventurous music fans across the world for more than two decades. SONIC YOUTH: SLEEPING NIGHTS AWAKE documents the band's Reno concert on July 4th 2006. As part of the nonprofit group Project Moonshine, a group of teenagers were given digital cameras to capture both the concert and a series of personal interviews from those involved in the tour, including band members Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, and Lee Ranaldo. Led by director Michael Albright and assistant director Brad Bynum, the Project Moonshine teens capture the essence of the influential band and the spirit of their live act.
Through confessions from the band and the many people that ensure the tour's success behind-the-scenes, SLEEPING NIGHTS AWAKE provides an intimate exploration into the Sonic Youth machine–one that illuminates the power of innovation and accessibility while giving new and old fans alike a cinematic all-access pass.

ABOUT A SON (96min.)
Dir. AJ Schnack

An intimate and moving meditation on the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain, based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audiotaped interviews conducted with Cobain by noted music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book "Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana." In the film, Kurt Cobain recounts his own life - from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with explosive fame - and offers, often piercing insights into his life, music, and times. The conversations heard in the film have never before been made public and they reveal a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but not particularly well understood.
If you missed EVERYDAY BLACK MAN on April 23rd, or if you just want to see it again, be sure not to miss her next screening at The Bal Theater in San Leandro on May 21st and 22nd with special musical guest DWAYNE WIGGINS of TONY TONI TONE.
